Discovering Irving Penn….

“A good photograph is one that communicates a fact, touches the heart and leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it. It is, in a word, effective.” Irving Penn

Irving Penn: a genius that has reinvented Black and White pictures like no one else, creator of the most Amazing Portraits, one of the most important Vogue Photograthers, creator of Art and Fashion, Minimalist and finally Perfectionist who believes that “imperfection makes a picture magical.”

He could be working in advertising , but luckly for us a gentelman by name Alexander Liberman ( Vogue Art directon in 1943) noted quickly enough the best direction for Irving- Photography!

However just before starting his career as a photographer Mr. Penn attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Arts where he studied drawing, painting and graphics. His first jobs where driving him in a right direction: Harper’s Bazaar, Saks Fith Avenue and finally Vogue. It was just about finding his best inside of this field and he couldn’t do any better.

But having said that, fashion wasn’t the limited space for Irving Penn, but simply the beauty and it could be just anything. ..apart from fashion photographs he also loved to shoot everyday objects – cigarette butts, decaying fruit and discarded clothing. And somehow he managed to give everything a shape and a soul creating by creating ART.

I love his photography and I will never get tired to see his pictures. He was one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century and someone like him is still to come … hopefully…

He was also a lucky person. Simply because he lived a life full of passion , for passion and he has been rewarded with the same… and still is!
